Brief description

Since its inception in 1986, CAAS has held open seminars on African area studies on a monthly basis, inviting experts from across Japan to share their latest research with the general audience. Additionally, CAAS launched the Kyoto University African Studies Seminar (KUASS) series in 2011, a program conducted in English by renowned scholars from outside the country.

Level/Field of study

KUASOSS builds on these efforts in collaboration with Africa’s leading universities and research institutes to present seminars featuring Kyoto University’s early-career researchers and graduate students. Participants from Kyoto will share their work with African audiences and explore opportunities for research collaboration with their local counterparts.

After the seminar, participants will be asked to submit a report by 31 March 2018, describing the research they presented at the event.

Submissions will be evaluated by CAAS faculty. Selection criteria include scholarly contributions to the field and the potential for collaborative research with leading universities or research institutes in Africa.

Applicants must be early-career researchers or graduate students affiliated with Kyoto University in research related to Africa, whether in a natural-science, social-science, or humanities field (work may cover other regions for comparative studies).

Those with a professorship are not eligible.

Participants will deliver an academic presentation at an African university or research institute qualified and available to host a KUASOSS event. Presentations must be conducted in English, French, or other languages, such as Swahili and Amharic.
